Walt Disney World in August: your monthly Disney vacation planning guide

We’re marching right along through the year, and if you’re anything like me, you can start to see the light at the end of the hot and humid tunnel known as summer. For Walt Disney World fans, the first signs that summer is coming to an end comes in the form of pumpkins — though there is still a couple months to go before you FEEL any sort of relief.

As you’ll see, Disney World gets the fall season into full swing pretty early, with the first signs of “autumn” appearing in Magic Kingdom quickly as August begins. Just a few short days later, we’re already steeped into the world of Halloween parties, trick-or-treat trails, and Boo-To-You parades. It may still feel like the thick of summer (thick being the operative word here…have you attempted to walk outside in Central Florida this time of year?) but August at Walt Disney World means one thing: pumpkins.

What’s happening at Walt Disney World in August

Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party

Disney World’s flagship event for the Halloween season, Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, takes place in 2025 on select evenings from August 15 through October 31. On those evenings, Magic Kingdom closes early to regular day guests with the parties taking place from 7:00 PM to 12:00 AM. Ticket holders can enter Magic Kingdom as early as 4:00 PM, giving them up to eight hours in the park.

Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party features fan-favorite entertainment like Mickey’s Boo To You Parade, Disney’s Not-So-Spooky Spectacular fireworks show, and the Hocus Pocus Villain Spelltacular. Attendees can also meet their favorite characters, many of whom are dressed in their own Halloween costumes exclusive to this event. Since this is a limited-attendance event, wait times for Magic Kingdom attractions are generally shorter than they are during the day.

Exclusive treats are also available for purchase during the Halloween parties, so be sure to bring your appetite.

You can also shop for specialty Halloween party merchandise. In short, for many Disney fans, August means the arrival of Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, their official kick off to fall.

Fall and Halloween decorations appear

Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party is a hard-ticket event, meaning you have to pay separate admission to attend. If you want to spend that money elsewhere on your vacation, you can still enjoy much of the fall and Halloween decorations Walt Disney World has to offer — the bulk of which is found in Magic Kingdom.

Take this as your permission to decorate your home as early as you see fit for fall. Seasonal decor could appear as early as August 1. A couple years ago, the first pumpkin was spotted in Magic Kingdom on July 31! There’s no hard date when this happens, however, so you just need to keep your eyes peeled. Whether you attend the Halloween party or not, an August vacation to Walt Disney World will still include festive pumpkins and autumnal decor.

EPCOT International Food and Wine Festival

If your August vacation to Walt Disney World isn’t until later in the month, you might be able to catch the beginning of this year’s EPCOT International Food and Wine Festival. The flagship festival begins this year on August 28 and continues daily through November 22.

The EPCOT Food and Wine Festival was the event that started it all for Disney foodies. Each year, the festival features outdoor Food Kitchens selling smaller portion bites and sips. The Eat to the Beat Concert Series is another hallmark event that coincides with the festival. Here’s the lineup of concert acts (included with your park admission on a first come, first serve basis!) for August:

• August 28: 4NRS Journey
• August 29 and 30: Joey Fatone and Friends
• August 31: MercyMe

All concerts begin at 5:30 PM, 6:45 PM and 8:00 PM.

The Food and Wine Festival also includes limited-time merchandise, scavenger hunts, and more. All guests are able to enjoy the Food and Wine Festival, so be sure to check it out (and have an appetite ready!) on your next Disney World vacation.

Destination D23

This year marks the return of Destination D23 at Walt Disney World. This is the smaller-scale but no less exciting fan event for D23, Disney’s official fan club. The event takes place at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort from August 29 through 31.

If you aren’t attending in person (the event is sold out), you should still keep your eyes on the internet that weekend. The D23 fan events are known for revealing Disney’s biggest announcements for the year. We could hear some exciting updates on previously-announced projects that are currently in the works (fingers crossed for opening dates, new concept art, and more concrete details!). We could also hear one or two surprise announcements, but the BIG reveals are typically reserved for the bigger D23 Fan Event, which takes place on opposite years in Anaheim, California.

Walt Disney World in August weather

The hot and humid weather continues into August. With no relief in sight from soaring temps and high dew points, prepare for uncomfortable weather if making the trip to Central Florida this time of year. August is about as worse as it gets when it comes to heat and humidity.

According to Weather Spark, the average high in Orlando for August is 90, and the average low is 76. Factor in the constant humidity (Weather Spark reports 30.8 out of 31 days in August being “oppressive”), and you’ll want to know where the closest air conditioned room is at all times.

We’re also in the peak rainy season, with an average of 20.2 days in August with precipitation. You’ll definitely want to assume it will rain at some point during your August vacation, and that rain is likely to be heavy at times. Those notorious rain storms this time of year generally pass quickly, so it’s not like these are day-long wash outs.

We’re also approaching peak hurricane season, though the official “peak” is generally in September and into October. You cannot rule out the chance for a hurricane or tropical storm to appear, however, so keep an eye on the weather forecast as your trip approaches. In extreme situations, Disney World’s hurricane policy is also worth a glance (as well as cancelation policies for your airline and other third party reservations).

Tips for visiting Walt Disney World in August

Stay hydrated and prepare for the heat

My number one tip for enjoying a summer vacation in Walt Disney World is to prepare for the heat and humidity. If it catches you off-guard, it is an incredible nuisance at best, but at worst, you could be dealing with conditions like heat exhaustion.

It is crucial to remain hydrated and drink plenty of water — my personal recommendation is to skip sugary drinks, alcohol, and heavy drinks like milkshakes on this trip. They aren’t the thirst quenchers you think they are when it’s this hot and humid out.

Another tip to keep in mind is to spend more time than you think indoors. Don’t be afraid to spend longer breaks indoors. Air conditioning is your friend. Go for the longer wait time if the ride has an indoor queue. For the ultimate recharge, consider taking a longer afternoon break back at your hotel where you can take showers, change into a new outfit, etc.

Don’t forget about free water park admission on your check-in day

There’s another solid beat-the-heat tip if you are staying on Walt Disney World property for your upcoming vacation. For all of 2025, guests of Walt Disney World resort hotels can enjoy free admission to one of Disney World’s water parks: Typhoon Lagoon or Blizzard Beach. Simply arrive at the water park of your choice on your check-in day and you’re all set (your name and the names of your guests must appear on the hotel reservation for admission).

The water parks are a great way to cool down (my favorite Disney World summer activity is lounging in the lazy river). Just be aware that lightning in the area could temporary close attractions.

Know which evenings include Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party

August signals the arrival of fall at Walt Disney World, though the weather certainly won’t feel that way. Regardless, Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party will bring costumes, candy, and family-friendly haunts to Magic Kingdom starting on August 15. This year, the parties take place on the following dates in August:

• August: 15, 17, 19, 22, 24, 26 and 29

This is important to know if you want to attend, but it’s also important to know even if you aren’t attending. Magic Kingdom closes early on those dates, so if you want to maximize your time in the park (especially if you want evening hours to dodge the sun, or you want to check out the new Disney Starlight parade), you’ll want to avoid Magic Kingdom on party dates.

Alternatively, guests report lower wait times and generally fewer crowds on party dates for all of those reasons I listed above. So if you want to hedge your bets on shorter wait times, you might have better luck on party dates. It’s just a good thing to know, no matter what your plans are.

Be aware of EPCOT crowds the first weekend of Food and Wine Festival

As I mentioned above, the EPCOT Food and Wine Festival begins this year on August 28. EPCOT fans and Disney foodies love to get a jump on the festival right when it begins, so you’ll want to be aware that EPCOT might be busier that first weekend. 

If you’re visiting the festival and you are using the Disney Dining Plan, you’ll also want to keep in mind that you can redeem those Snack credits on the festival booth’s food and non-alcoholic drink options. Redeeming those Snack credits on festival menu items is generally a good if not great way to maximize their value.

Plan for a trip later in the month to avoid crowds

With kids returning to school throughout August, the crowds may dissipate in the latter half of the month. This is not a 100% fool-proof strategy, as crowds can appear throughout the year, but in general, the beginning of the school year is a good time to visit Disney World if you want lower wait times and a little more elbow room. There are some exceptions (see what I mentioned above for the kickoff of the EPCOT Food and Wine Festival).
